If you want a company that includes many of the protections and features of a corporation without as much red tape, an LLC may be the best structure for you.
If you want a company structure that clearly divides your personal assets and business from those of your company, you may be interested in forming a corporation. A corporation requires more red tape than an LLC does.
A nonprofit (or not-for- profit) corporation is a special kind of corporation that has no shareholders, and is usually organized for educational, charitable, social, religious, civic, or humanitarian purposes. Except for salaries and expenses, a nonprofit corporation provides no income to members, directors, or officers.
Many businesses want to be known as, or use a name other than the legal name of their company. To do that in DC, you must register a trade name (dba) with the DC Government.
